Selectors stick with new squad for one-dayers

( L - R ) Powell, Fletcher

ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC):

With the first-choice West Indies players still on strike, the regional selectors on Monday named two teenagers in a 14-man squad to face Bangladesh in the first two one-day internationals of the three-match series.

The squad contains six uncapped players, including 19-year-old Leeward Islands players - opening batsman Kieran Powell and wicketkeeper/batsman Devon Thomas.

Batsmen Dale Richards and Travis Dowlin, both of whom made their Test debuts in the opening Test in St Vincent two weeks ago, are now set to play their first ODIs after being included in the squad.

Fast bowler Nelon Pascal, who was picked in the squad for the two Tests but failed to play, has been retained while pacer Gavin Tonge has gained his first Windies call-up.

The left-handed Powell, who celebrates his 20th birthday next March, is an exciting stroke-maker who has represented the Young West Indies at the Under-19 World Cup.

First-class century

Thomas, meanwhile, has been good enough to score a regional first-class century and was also a member of the squad to the Youth World Cup in Malaysia last year.

The selectors have handed a recall to veteran Windward Islands all-rounder Rawl Lewis, while rookie opener Andre Fletcher and Test batsman Devon Smith are back in the fold.

Lewis, a seasoned regional campaigner, has played sporadically for the West Indies since making his international debut 12 years ago. At 34, he is now poised to add to his tally of 26 ODIs.

The talented Fletcher has only played four one-dayers and was a member of the West Indies that reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship in England last month.

His fellow Grenadian, Devon Smith, will bring some measure of experience to the squad, having already played 31 Tests and 26 ODIs. He played as recently as the two-Test tour of England when the first-choice Windies lost both matches by huge margins.

Squad: Floyd Reifer (captain), Darren Sammy (vice-captain), David Bernard, Travis Dowlin, Andre Fletcher, Rawl Lewis, Nikita Miller, Nelon Pascal, Kieran Powell, Dale Richards, Kemar Roach, Devon Smith, Devon Thomas, Gavin Tonge.
