Jamaica could make at least one change to their starting line-up heading into today's start of their all-important three-day TCL Group WICB U-19 Cup clash against joint leaders the Leeward Islands at Melbourne Oval.
Ramon Senior, Excelsior High's stylish middle-order batsman, could make way for Manchester High's Courtnay Allen who, after disappointing returns of 11 and nine in the team's first match against Trinidad and Tobago, was dropped for the Guyana match, which ended earlier this week. Jamaica won the match by nine wickets.
The right handed Senior, who is a former West Indies Under-15 representative, has only managed to score 17, one and one in the championship thus far, and apart from being the least successful of the Jamaican batsmen, looked out of form in all three innings.
This could therefore leave the Jamaican coaching staff, headed by Andre Coley, with no other alternative but to give the left-handed Allen another chance to prove his worth, as evidenced by his performances earlier this year in which he helped Manchester Lions secure the national two-day Jamaica Super League crown.
Jamaica, who surprisingly lost their opening match to Trinidad and Tobago by an innings and 60 runs, are fourth in the six-team round-robin championship with 12 points, 12 behind the Leewards and Trinidad and Tobago.
To remain in serious contention for the Cup, they need to register a positive result against the Leewards, a task which stand-in captain, St Elizabeth Technical's Paul Palmer Jr, believes is quite possible.
"We have been improving day by day, and come the Leewards game, we hope to put in a clinical performance, as we did against Guyana," Palmer said.
Defending champions Barbados, who were defeated by the Leewards after claiming first innings, are third in the standings on 16 points, and will play Trinidad and Tobago at Up Park Camp, while the Windward Islands (0) and Guyana (4) will do battle at Sabina Park in the round's other matches.
Creary injured
Meanwhile, Jamaica's regular captain, batsman André Creary, who, along with Barbadian batsman Craig Brathwaite, was a part of the West Indies 14-man squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, returned to the island on Tuesday. He is, however, suffering from a groin strain and is expected to miss the Leewards match.
