Walker is More Than Ready

HONEYOFALADY, one of three winners for Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas, wins the ninth race over 1500 metres at Caymanas Park last Saturday at odds of 5-2. Cardenas also won aboard SUGAR'S IMAGE and REGENCY in the first and sixth races, respectively. - Colin Hamilton/Freelance Photographer

Both the Pick-9 and Super-6 start anew at Caymanas Park tomorrow, the Pick-9 having been caught by seven punters last Saturday, each receiving $207,173.

Oddly enough, the Pick-9 threw up 10 winners, this resulting from a dead heat between BDELLIUM and WAR CHEST in the sixth race over 1300 metres.

The Super-6, meanwhile, was caught by 118 punters, each receiving $14,947.50. The Pick-9 will embrace races two to 10, the Super-6 from five to 10. We look at the Super-6 which gets under way with non-winners of two race over 1500 metres to be contested by nine starters, including the likely favourite MORE THAN READY with champion jockey Omar Walker aboard.

Last Saturday, MORE THAN READY was installed a 9-5 favourite for a 1300-metre race, but found himself badly outpaced in the backstretch. Although flying at the finish, he ended up a mere length away fourth to BDELLIUM and WAR CHEST, both of whom finished in a dead heat for first.

Given the additional 200 metres of this race, MORE THAN READY should make no mistake. CHRISTMAS TREAT, who finished a length behind him for fifth (closing), looks a real danger.

The front-running ESCAPE THE FATE will have to be caught in the sixth race over 1400 metres for maiden four-year-olds and up, this attracting 14 starters.

Trained by Morris Powell, the four-year-old colt by Tracking out of Purple Heart has finished second in his last three races, the most recent over this trip on May 16 when beaten a length by COLORADO BABE under a top weight of 57.0kg.

ESCAPE THE FATE

Having worked well last Saturday morning, galloping seven furlongs in 1:32.3, ESCAPE THE FATE, from the convenient mark of 53.0kg, should lead home FREEDOM PRINCE and ROLL THE DICE.

In the seventh race over 1600 metres for the Violet Armond Memorial Cup (claiming $270,000-$250,000), victory should go to the stretch-running mare MISS ROSE, who steps down in class to vie for this trophy.

She was not disgraced in better company on June 27 when finishing four lengths fifth to MAGNIFICO over 1500 metres, but prior to that was an upset winner over this trip on April 25 when outfinishing BORN FIGHTER by a length on a $325,000-claiming tag.

Despite the presence of the recent winners QUERIDA and EL PEQUENA, not to mention DESIGNED FOR LUCK and SOUND OF SPEED (regaining form), BORN FIGHTER looks the principal danger to my selection, MISS ROSE.

Speedy ALESIA WAY (Walker up) gets the nod over AWESOME REWARD, KING'S LAW and EXPLOSIVE HOPE in the eighth race over the straight for maiden three-year-olds. Then, take the 2008 Superstakes winner AD INFINITUM (working exceptionally well) to lead home PRIME MINISTER (fit) and SHANGHAI PASS in the ninth race over 1820 metres for the Nigel B. Nunes Memorial Trophy in which 11 starters have been declared.

NEW KINGSTON, second to UNDAUNTED as the favourite last Saturday, is set to atone the closing race, the Track Price Plus Dig Out Handicap, over 1200 metres.
