It's now official. The word out of Canada is that the high commissioner-designate to Jamaica is Stephen Hallihan, who will also be the non-resident High Commissioner to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

He takes to the appointment a wealth of experience gained in both the Canadian Forces, where he has held various appointments, including a tour as a peacekeeper in Cyprus, and extensive service on NATO assignments in Europe. He also served the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), where he served in Malawi and South Africa; as senior policy adviser in the Privy Council Office (in Canada), director general of strategic change at National Defence, and director general of the Afghanistan Task Force with CIDA.

Married, he is currently director general of the Afghanistan Task Force in the Privy Council Office, and he and his wife, Cathy, have two children.

He is expected to take up his appointment some time in August.
