No more taxes
The Editor, Sir:

I could not help but scratch my head when I read about the proposed contemplation by Government to meet its fiscal package.

If my memory serves me correctly, it hasn't been two years since they raised vehicle licenses, firearm licenses and other licenses.

I read the world news a lot and am following measures taken by other countries in tackling this spiralling problem. It would seem that only the Jamaican Government sees taxing an already overtaxed population, which is fighting to keep food on their table and send their kids to school, as a means of solving the problem.

Tax and more tax

I have not heard the Government propose a moratorium on mortgages nor anything to help the citizenry. All they can think about is tax and more tax.

Income tax is 25 per cent of salary, GCT is 16.5 per cent, then you have education tax, then you have NIS, then there is NHT, what will be left after an increase of 4.5 per cent ?

I would like to say, "Have mercy, Percy", but Percy has long gone. I will, therefore, say, "Let me get a piece of my own goose, Bruce". How can a man be working only to be taxed?

Can the Government think about spending less or ask the ministers to take a pay cut in the interest of the nation?

It's always the people who have to give up more of the little that they have, while some people don't feel the pinch.

I am, etc.,
