Valentine gifts for $0

Valentine's Day is a special time to spend with your mate.

The economic crunch has caused many to cut costs in all directions. If you feel the need to give a gift, the best way to make it truly memorable is to make it a shared experience. If you're hard up for funds, scratch those plans for jewellery or going out.

Some of the best gifts are the products of thoughtfulness and the memories may last much longer than a dozen roses or a box of chocolates.

Sentiment counts

According to Lorna Eaton, a family counsellor, it is the sentiment behind the gift that really counts.

"When you do things unusual and the person sees that you exert a lot of energy and time in it, it strengthens the relationship," said Eaton.

Popular poet Joan Andrea Hutchinson has similar views. She said doing something special for the partner means a lot.

"Sometimes you buy a gift, but it doesn't mean anything, it's just about celebrating the day. But when you take time out to do something yourself, it means more," said Hutchinson.

Love in action

Romantic dinners are not exclusive to high-priced restaurants. Take out those pork chops or whatever else from the back of the freezer, strap on the apron and get busy in the kitchen. Your best attempt at a home-cooked meal can be a huge treat and can cost virtually nothing.

Hide a note under your partner's pillow the night before or little notes around the house on the day, telling the person what the relationship means to you. Little things make the difference - the surprise factor is nice.

If your significant other delights in the great outdoors, go on a short hike and spend time together.

Take a leisurely stroll together in a garden or park; this can be pleasing to the soul.

Give your partner a sensuous massage, manicure and pedicure.

Bake a cake and be creative in the eating. There is a lot in that cupboard of you go rummaging.

Gather pictures of the individual and make a card.

Paste freshly picked flowers on a love note.

Give your hard-working spouse a full day to relax, doing whatever he or she wants.

Insert a rolled-up message telling the person you love him/her in a wine bottle, tied with a red bow.

What's in rose? More than you think!

If roses are on your Valentine's agenda, make sure you pick the right colour. Different colours symbolise different sentiments.

White
