Premier's son to stand trial
LOS ANGELES (CMC):

After a week of testimony from alleged victims, a judge in Los Angeles, California, has ruled that the son of Bermuda's Premier, Ewart Brown, will stand trial for alleged sexual assault.

Dr Kevin Antario Brown, 37, has been charged with 33 counts of alleged molestation of female patients at three medical clinics in Los Angeles, where he practised medicine.

Twelve women, including an undercover police officer, testified before Superior Court Judge William R. Hollingsworth, Jr that Dr Brown inappropriately touched them while practising medicine. One woman even charged that the doctor raped her.

Brown, who has been released on USS$4 million bail, will reappear in court on February 25 for arraignment.

The medical doctor, who has pleaded not guilty to 33 felony sex counts, faces life in prison if convicted.

Brown's lawyer, Blair Berk, told the court Wednesday that the testimonies of the women were inconsistent and unreliable, and that many came forward because of media reports that the doctor was arrested.

"Dr Brown will continue to vigorously defend his factual innocence in this case," Berk said.

"The showing required for probable cause for a preliminary hearing is obviously extremely low," added Berk, stating that she could not comment further on the case because of a gag order.

Judge Hollingsworth said the women's testimonies were credible and, therefore, admissible in court.

"All of the witnesses were very credible, including the (undercover) officer who testified," he said.
