Half-Way Tree eyesore
The Editor, Sir:

To my horror, I see that Digicel is erecting more bright red boxes in Half-Way Tree.

Some years ago, another company placed a large float advertising its products in the midst of the gorge at Bog Walk. Adverse public reaction to the defacing of one of Jamaica's most beautiful natural areas forced the company to remove it. I can only hope that there will be enough adverse public comment on Digicel's disfigurement of one of Jamaicans landmarks, to force its management to remove these bright red 'cells' from an area which is rich in this country's history.

A line from the song "The banks of my own lovely lee", the anthem of Ireland's Country Cork is "'Tis a beautiful land this dear isle of song, its gems shed its light to the world"; Digicel's antecedents hail form Country Cork and I am sure that with their pride in Ireland's history, they would never dream of constructing similar bright red eyesores in the midst of the squares of Blarney or Cobh or other historical sites of Country Cork.

Lack of respect

Of course, even if they did, the authorities there would never allow such monstrosities to be erected. Why then are we in Jamaica content to allow any company, local or foreign, to treat our won history with such total lack of respect? What Digicel should do is remove the red deformities, beautify Half-Way Tree with plants and rock pools, and place park wardens to ensure the area is maintained. It is pointless to appeal to our own authorities. Pride in Jamaica and things Jamaican appear nowhere on their list of priorities.

I am, etc.,

JEFFREY C. COBHAM
