Ben Francis, inter-zone aspirants seek qualification

Western Bureau:

The rural segment of the 2009 ISSA/Pepsi/ Digicel schoolboy football season will be fought on two separate fronts this afternoon, as while the daCosta Cup will continue with four rescheduled games, action will commence in the Ben Francis Knock Out with four games as well.

In the daCosta Cup, for which 21 of the 24 qualifiers have already been decided for inter-zone round, William Knibb High School, Bog Walk High, Cedric Titus, Charlemont High, St Mary Technical and St Mary High are all locked in a tussle for the three available places.

Munro College, also assured of their inter-zone spot, will be seeking to take the sole Zone E Ben Francis place ahead of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).

With Marcus Garvey Technical already assured of the group's Ben Francis slot, third-place, William Knibb (23) will be seeking a win against Aabuthnott Gallimore, which will move them into the inter-zone phase ahead of Cedric Titus, which have completed their fixture with 25 points.

Should William Knnib, which defeated Aabuthnott Gallimore 3-1 in the first round, fail to repeat their win, the Cassman Williams-coached team will not be the team joining Marcis Garvey in the inter-zone.

Safe bet

In Zone E, where Munro and fellow inter-zone qualifiers STETHS are joint leaders with 22 points each, Munro look a safe bet to beat lowly placed Newell High in their rescheduled game and land the group's coveted Ben Francis KO place. In their first round game, Munro blanked Newell 6-0.

In Zone J, where Dinthill Technical are the zone's Ben Francis KO qualifier, third-place Bog Walk (20) could move past second-place Charlemont High (23) for the second inter-zone place with a win against McGrath. However, a simple win alone will not do as with Charlemont having a +12 goal difference to their +8, Bog Walk may need to win big and hope corresponding results work in their favour. Bog Walk won the first round game 3-1.

In Zone K, where Annotto Bay have won the group, third-place St Mary Technical (19) will be aiming to go past St Mary High (21) with a win in their rescheduled game against Islington. However, should they fail to win, St Mary could advance alongside Annotto Bay.

In the first round Ben Francis KO games, which are all slated to start at 3p.m., all four games should generate much interest. The match-up between Rusea's and Marcus Garvey at Jarrett Park and the Lennon High against Spaldings game at Jamalco Sports Club, should generate the most interest.
