LETTER OF THE DAY - Review plans for contesting elections
The Editor, Sir: I am filled with grief when I think that a country which is grappling for finances could be spending money it can ill afford on elections which are not essential to life.

Commish misunderstood
The Editor, Sir: I did not see or hear the general text of what Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin said re religion and the expected performance of duty. However, from the context of your Letter of the Day (May 30) submitted by Herbert J. Thompson and another that I read, I think Lewin was either being quoted out of context or was simply misunderstood.

'No immunity for Adventist cops'
The Editor, Sir: I write with regard to Herbert Thompson's letter (May 30). The police force is an essential service. For it to be effective, it must be fully staffed - this includes weekends. I can see the criminal elements in our society rubbing their hands with glee, knowing that come Saturdays the JCF will be understaffed.

A political charade
The Editor, Sir: After reading the article 'Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) hits back - Golding moves to oust MPs over dual citizenship' published in this paper on May 30, I am left to feel hopeless about the future of Jamaica. The main reason is the lack of integrity among the people who are leading our country.

Lay magistrates and the law
Dear Prime Minister,

Your address to the gathering at the installation of the new custos of Hanover caught my attention on the portion reported on TVJ re 'The expanded role of the lay magistrate.'

Doubts, ideas re: bond idea
The Editor, Sir: I was most intrigued by Howard Hamilton's article in The Gleaner of May 28 and the idea of a bond to raise the money for major works, in and around Kingston. I have very grave doubts about the idea of the bonds, ever taking off, unless there is some incentive.
