A political charade
The Editor, Sir:

After reading the article 'Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) hits back - Golding moves to oust MPs over dual citizenship' published in this paper on May 30, I am left to feel hopeless about the future of Jamaica. The main reason is the lack of integrity among the people who are leading our country.

I thought that after the Daryl Vaz case every member of parliament with dual citizenship who cannot legally sit in the House of Representatives would have declared himself or herself and the necessary step taken to correct the situation. But no, this what the leaders are doing: JLP leader Bruce Golding forcing the PNP to declare themselves in his statement "we have evidence that the question of foreign citizenship is not confined to the government side. We have given instructions to our lawyers to file constitutional motions seeking a declaration based on the same principle that was established in the Daryl Vaz case".

Wait-and-see game

On the other hand, the PNP leader, Portia Simpson Miller, is playing a wait-and-see game as she said the party "will file motions against the JLP representatives who are sitting in Parliament that we did not file for. So if they file, then we can file as well".

I am a firm believer that the Constitution should be amended to allow Jamaicans with any form of dual citizenship to sit in the House of Representatives. But has it stands now, the law does not allow it and our law should be respected. So leaders of both parties should get their act together and fall in line with the 'Daryl Vaz ruling'.

The games being played now should be halted immediately and the people of Jamaica offered leadership with honesty and integrity.

I am, etc.,
