Abe doubtful - PNP struggles to find candidate for West Portland
Correction/Clarification

In a story carried on A1 of Sunday's Gleaner, the governing Jamaica Labour Party was improperly abbreviated JAP instead of JLP.

We apologise for the error.

With five days to nomination day in West Portland, the Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is yet to settle on a candidate to face off with Jamaica Labour Party's Daryl Vaz for the seat.

Well-placed Sunday Gleaner sources said last night that Abe Dabdoub, the front-runner for the candidacy, may not be the party's standard-bearer in the March 23 by-election.

The executive of the party is due to make a decision on its candidate tomorrow, at which time the names of Kenneth Rowe and Doreen Forbes are expected to be high on the selection list.

PNP sources told The Sunday Gleaner last night that Dabdoub has been trying to convince the party not to nominate a candidate for the by-election in the constituency.

He is said to have told the party that there was a good chance of winning the seat at the Privy Council.

Rowe, a former JLP candidate, lost by 281 votes to Errol Ennis in the 2002 general election. He remained the caretaker for the constituency but switched allegiance to the PNP after Vaz was selected to represent the JLP in the 2007 general election over him.

Attempts to contact Dabdoub prove futile up to press time last night.

Vaz ousted

The Court of Appeal ousted the Jamaica Labour party (JLP) Daryl Vaz as Member of Parliament on Friday when it upheld a ruling that Vaz was not eligible to sit in Parliament as he had pledge allegiance to a foreign power.

Vaz at the time of his nomination had American citizenship. He has since renounced it.
