AFTER THE big excitement at round two of the Florida Winter Tour (FWT) race meet, held in Homestead, Miami, last weekend, the action, like a pendulum, will switch to the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston, where the country's top go-karters will demonstrate their skills today.

The meet, which is the second on the Jamaica Karting Association schedule of events, is set to get under way at noon, but prior to the start, the competitors will be kept busy on the track, qualifying for grid position.

Although he was not part of the Jamaican contingent that competed at the FWT meet last weekend, eight-year-old Jonathan Law, Joshua Sirgany and Mark Anthony Eaton are among the top drivers who are expected to battle for supremacy in the crowded 80cc Class.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Matthew Williams has been demonstrating for sometime that he has returned to form. He could be the man to upset the apple cart in the highly competitive Rotax Junior Class. According to a report on the Iriekart website, the Hillel High student arrived late at the meet in Miami last weekend. Because of this, he did not get the luxury of doing as many laps as the other Jamaicans.

Improved lap times

In spite of this, he was able to improve his lap times each time he went out. The report further said that unlike his previous attempts, Williams was able to qualify for the finals. Today, he will be under the microscope of the scores of motorsport fans who are expected to turn out in droves.

Colin Daley Jr continues to be impressive. At the meet in Miami last week, he gave one of his best performances to date in the FWT series, climbing from 22nd to 9th position in one of the events. The Iriekart report said he qualified in the top 10 for round three, while finishing fourth behind the top drivers in the United States. He will be challenged today by Thomas Issa in the Rotax Mini-Max Class.

Among the other karters who are expected to shine at today's meet are Peter Moodie Jr, who was also at the Miami meet last weekend. His performance has set the stage for an interesting showdown between himself and Martin Anderson, who also did well at the overseas meet.

Dr Mark Minott should by now benefit from the experience gained at the overseas meet. This means he should be more prepared to take on Mario Mair in the Rotax Masters Class this afternoon.
