  • Hermon Spoerri double wicket today

The annual Hermon Spoerri Business House Cricket Association double wicket cricket competition takes place today at Jamaica Broilers playing field, Spring Village, starting at 10.

The competition, which is part sponsored by Best Dressed Chicken, has attracted eight teams, including defending champions National Water Commission (NWC).

Other participating teams are Jamaica Broilers, LIME, Digicel, Jamalco, St Ann Jamaica Bauxite, Sagicor and Continental Baking Company.

The first match pits Jamalco against LIME, followed by St Ann Bauxite vs Continental Baking Company, Digicel vs NWC and Sagicor vs Jamaica Broilers. The winners will advance to the semi-finals and the last two to the final which offers a first prize of $7,000 and a trophy, and second prize of $4,000. Each team is required to face six overs.

The competition was conceived by the late president of the Henriques Cup Cricket Board, Hermon Spoerri in the late 1970s and has been running every year since. It also offers cash incentives to outstanding fielders, most catches, batsmen hitting sixes, bowlers taking most wickets, etc.

Meanwhile, the big 35-over clash between the top two teams in Business House Cricket - LIME and Jamaica Broilers - was curtailed by rain last Sunday at Spring Village.

Broilers made 130 all out off their 35 overs with national player Keith Hibbert scoring 60 against fellow national player Yannick Elliott 3-20, Damion Jacobs and Shaun Lodge 2-18 each. LIME reached 47 for three when the showers arrived - Jacobs 23 not out.

  • Gleaner reach netball final

The Gleaner Company advanced to the final of the Business House Netball Association Junior League when they clipped Pan Caribbean 15-14 in a hard-fought semi-final match at the Leila Robinson Courts on Saturday, October 10.

In a ding-dong tussle, the Gleaner girls proved stronger in the dying stages to clinch victory, thanks to the shooting of Sophia Davis-Johnson and Michelle Currey, both of whom accounted for the 15 points. Centre Kadeen Graham captained the Gleaner team for this match under their rotating captain format aimed at fostering leadership qualities in members of the team.

Gleaner will meet Wray & Nephew in the final on Saturday, October 24 inside the National Indoor Sports Centre. Wray & Nephew defeated Advantage General in the other semi-final.

In the Senior League semis, unbeaten Scotiabank 'A' whipped their 'B' team 78-32 with goal shooter Marsha Murphy scoring 64 points to reach the final. Scotia 'A', who are overwhelming favourites to win the league, will meet Jamaica Broilers in the October 24 final at the Indoor Sports Centre. Broilers defeated RBTT in the other semi-final.

  • Inter-Bank football

First-year entrants Pan Caribbean scored a notable upset in the Norman Goodison Inter-Bank football league last Sunday, defeating FirstCaribbean Bank 3-1 at the NWC playing field, Mona.

Second half goals from St Mathew Anglin, Omar Brown and Shawn Mills on the stroke of full time were enough to put away their opponents.

As a result of this victory, Pan Caribbean have advanced to the October 25 semi-finals where they will meet the unbeaten defending champions Scotiabank who topped the preliminary round with 13 points. JNBS will meet RBTT in the other semi-final on October 25. Both matches are scheduled for the NWC playing field.
