Glenmuir High School copped the Marcus Garvey Award for Excellence in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) Performing Arts competition. Glenmuir racked up more than 50 medals and several trophies at the parish and national levels to gain their second hold on the prestigious award, which they first won in 2008. Other nominees were Ardenne High, Ascot High, Green Island High and St Jago High School.

Other awards presented at the ceremony, which was held last Thursday at Rex Nettleford Hall, included trophies for the 'Most Outstanding Schools/Groups' in the areas of music, drama, speech, traditional folk forms and dance. Ardenne High School copped the awards for music and drama and Norwich Primary School in Portland won the award for speech. The award for outstanding dance went to Ascot High School, while the Tivoli Dance Ensemble was named the most outstanding studio group. Green Island High School in Hanover claimed the award for traditional folk forms.

The winner of the Marcus Garvey Award is determined based on participation in at least three of the five areas of the national performing arts competition and a tally of points based on medals and other awards. At present, the JCDC is conducting seminars and workshops islandwide in preparation for next year's competition.
