Arrogance at its worst?
The Editor, Sir:

In listening to a programme on Power 106 hosted by André Hylton on Tuesday July 21, I was made aware that Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie has seen it fit, once again, to clear New Kingston of illegally-parked cars by night.

While I do believe in discipline, I would question the method used to instil it.

In a city so filled with corruption and serious crime, so burdensome that the police can hardly manage, is this move not making individuals more vulnerable to criminals? The Government is trying to regulate the taxi service, but there will still be criminals operating illegal taxis, night or day. People who believe that they need to vacate their homes to seek some enjoyment or to relax, now come out at whatever hour to find that their cars have been towed for illegal parking.

The walk to and from approved parking facilities, although not necessarily far could create fear for some individuals. On the other hand, in using these designated parking zones which are not free, the parking ticket that you receive, if you get one, clearly indicates that the parking is at your own risk. That's why many people prefer to park close to the establishments that they are patronising.

Reconsider this strategy

Could the mayor not seek the help of the police in ticketing these individuals rather than having the vehicles towed away? How about the KSAC providing proper security within the confines of the designated parking lots? Would that not have been better than creating the circumstances for persons to get into a taxi to attempt to reach home in the early morning hours?

Mr Mayor, I would kindly ask that you reconsider this strategy. This is not Cuba or Nazi Germany.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL D. BROWN
