MVP's men's sprint relay team was among four early record breakers at last night's UTech Track and Field Classic at the National Stadium.

The MVP quartet of Barbadian Andrew Hinds, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter, both members of Jamaica's record-breaking 4x100m team at the Beijing Olympics, and Ainsley Waugh clocked 38.46 seconds.

Second best in world

The time, which erased the previous mark of 39.22 set by the same team last year, is also the second best in the world this year, behind the 38.10 by a Usain Bolt-led Racers Lions at the recent Gibson Relays.

Manuel Fajardo of Cuba also went under the previous record, with its 38.61 for second, while UTech finished third in 39.26.

Calabar High, with 40.65, were also in record-breaking form. They beat the 40.85 they did last year.

St Elizabeth Technical finished second, in 41.13, while St George's came in third in 41.17.

St Benedict's Primary broke two records. In the prep and primary boys' section, the school ran 50.07 to beat the old mark of 50.98, while the girls did 51.97 to beat Vaz's 56.65, set last year.

Moral-boosting victory

However, although Vere Technical did not break the girls' high school record, the quartet of Celia Walters, Shericka Jackson, Jura Levy and Dreandre Whitehorne secured a moral-boosting victory over Holm-wood Technical and Edwin Allen High heading into this week's Penn Relays.

Vere recorded 44.13 to beat Holmwood (44.89) and Edwin Allen (45.06).

In the women's 4x100m, Manuel Fajardo won in 44.16 ahead of Sprint Tech (45.32) and UTech (46.75).
