First innings battle in MoBay
Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

Guyana, behind Narsingh Deonarine, who became the first batsman to score a 1,000 runs in a single regional domestic season, were battling along at 268 for six in reply to Jamaica's first innings 389 at the close of play on yesterday's second day of their 13th round fixture at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay.

Skipper Assad Fudadin and wicketkeeper Derwin Christian were the not out batsmen for Guyana, with 32 and six runs, respectively. David Bernard Jr and Odean Brown, with two wickets each, were the top wicket-takers for Jamaica.

Resuming at 294 for four, Jamaica's batting, which flourished, on Friday, faltered badly yesterday as after promptly taking the new ball at the start of play, Guyana sliced through the batting as five wickets fell for a mere 59 runs as the innings crumbled to 353 for nine.

Trapped leg before wicket

Bernard, who resumed on his overnight 32, added four runs before he was trapped leg before wicket by Barnwell for 36 with the score on 316. Eighteen runs later, Jamaica lost Carlton Baugh Jr, who was trapped in front by Brendan Bess for 63 at 334. His innings, which lasted for 68 balls, included 10 fours.

With the score on 347, Daren Powell went caught by Steven Jacobs off Barnwell for eight. With the addition of one run, Barnwell also claimed the scalp of Brendan Nash trapped leg before for eight. Gavin Wallace came and left quickly, caught by Sewnarine Chattergoon off Bess for four to leave Jamaica at 353 for nine.

Bevon Brown (13 not out) and Andrew Richardson (25) halted the Jamaican slide, adding a valuable 36 for the last wicket.

Barnwell emerged the top bowler for Guyana, returning figures of five wickets for 77 runs off 23 overs. Bess got two for 98 off 23 overs while spinner Davendra Bishoo, Jacobs and Veerasammy Permaul got a wicket each.

In their turn at bat, Guyana got off to a good start with Barnwell and Chattergoon putting on 79 for the first wicket before Barnwell, with his tally on 38, fell to an excellent slip catch by Brenton Parchment off Bernard.

Leon Johnson, who replaced Barnwell, did not last long as after getting just three, he edged a delivery from Richardson to Donovan Pagon at first slip, who gobbled up the catch, making the score 88 for two.

It was at that stage that Deonarine joined Chattergoon and they stayed together until tea break as Chattergoon reached his 50, which came off 77 balls. Resuming at 126 for two, Guyana added nine runs before spinner Odean Brown trapped Chattergoon leg before for 63 at 135.

After breaking Stuart Williams' record of 974 runs in a single WICB domestic season and then moving past the 1,000 mark, Deonarine was dismissed, caught Parchment off Bernard for 63.

IN ANGUILLA: Trinidad and Tobago, responding to the Leeward Islands' 303 all out, reached 292 for three at the close.

IN BARBADOS: Combined Campuses & Colleges, replying to Barbados' first innings total of 235, reached 271 for eight at the close.
