15 driving tips

It is one thing to be in an accident but another to know that you have caused it.

"By observing the road code, good judgement and restraint, you can reduce the possibility of such an event," says Kanute Hare of the Road Traffic Unit in the Ministry of Transport. According to him, motorists must adhere to the old adage 'drive with care, life has no spare.'

Hare posits 15 tips for Drivers:

1. Refrain from driving with one hand on the steering wheel.

2. Stay away from improper use of the gear selector.

3. Drive within the approved speed limit.

4. There is absolutely no lane for 'dangerous' and 'careless' driving on the roadways.

5. While driving, stay clear of the soft shoulder and the ensure proper usage of vehicle indicators .

6. Refrain from driving a defective motor vehicle.

7. Avoid smoking while driving.

8. Avoid obstructing traffic flow.

9. Vehicles with their engines running should not be left unattended to.

10. Never 'show off' with your automobile; resist this temptation.

11. Do not try to punish other drivers for their mistakes. If another driver does something rude or inconsiderate, do not take it upon yourself to cut him off or crowd him unto the shoulder in retaliation.

12. Never mix drinking with driving.

13. Do not drive your car until it has been thoroughly warmed up.

14. Avoid excessive use of the horn in places.

15. Avoid driving with objects or forms on the dashboard.
