SECOND-HALF goals from substitute Andrew Davis guided Constant Spring to a 2-1 win over Maverley/Hughenden in the Claro/Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League opening round at Constant Spring yesterday.
Davis, who watched from the bench as Maverley/Hughenden took a 20th-minute lead, equalised in the 71st and found the winner in the 78th.
The game started tentatively slow but, after 10 minutes, Maverley/Hughenden, spearheaded by forward Lockley Thompson, took control.
From then on, Constant Spring were under pressure and things got worse when their goalkeeper, Dwayne Morgan, who failed to control a ball in his area, fouled Thompson.
The referee, who was right on the play, blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. Thompson duly fired the resulting penalty home.
Maverley/Hughenden had a few other opportunities to score during their dominant phase but faulty shooting let them down. Again, the second half started out slow but picked up pace with the injection of Davis in the 65th minute.
Attacks on goal
Davis had a few attacks on goal before he broke the deadlock. He was well positioned inside the area when Maverley failed to clear a free kick, which gave him an easy chance to make it 1-1.
The goal brought added life to Constant Spring's forwards and, again, Davis was inside the area to head home the winner for his team. He, however, was denied a hat-trick, not by a good save, but because he chose to fire straight into the 'keeper from six yards out.
Danny Lyn, Constant Spring's coach, said he was confident of victory after watching Maverley/Hughenden's first-half performance.
"We were giving Maverley too many opportunities in the midfield and we took over the game when we stopped the long passes and put pressure on the defence," Lyn said.
Roberto Chen, Maverley/Hughenden's coach, blamed his team's defeat on poor finishing.
