'Wiki' leak leaves Hay-Webster mum
Nedburn Thaffe, Gleaner Writer

Opposition member of parliament (MP) for South Central St Catherine, Sharon Hay-Webster, has refused to immediately address claims made in a diplomatic cable from the United States Embassy, which raise questions about whether she deliberately misled the Jamaican people about her dual-citizenship status.

The cable, obtained by The Gleaner through partnership with non-profit whistle-blower organisation WikiLeaks, alleges that the People's National Party (PNP) MP visited the office of the US Embassy in Kingston on July 31, 2009, to renounce her US citizenship only to return four days later to withdraw the renunciation.

The story, carried in yesterday's Sunday Gleaner, has drawn the attention of youth affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Generation 2000, which has since called for Hay-Webster's resignation.

Yesterday, when The Gleaner Power 106 FM news contacted the South Central MP, she said she had taken the decision to withhold comment based on the advice of her lawyer.
