Cornwall College's Under-19 team joined Herbert Morrison Technical High School atop the standings in the 2009-10 KFC-Western Schoolboy Basketball Championship on Monday after-noon when they registered a good 74-62 win over Mannings School in the feature game of a Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts double-header.

In the first game the rampant Cornwall College junior team, which has a two-point lead atop the Under-16 competition, blew away their Mannings counterparts by an emphatic 86-13 margin.

In a resolute display, the Cornwall senior team won three of the four quarters against their Mannings counterparts by 12-8, 21-18 and 18-13 margins before drawing the final quarter 23-23.

The win puts them on 14 points, the same as Herbert Morrison who have played one game less.

Gavin Brown and Christopher Smith, who both scored 25 points, and Peter Reid, who had 16 rebounds and 11 blocks, were the outstanding players for the Cornwall College team, whose overall record now stands at six wins and two defeats in eight games.

Ruel Gordon, with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Troy Reid, 16 points and nine rebounds, and André Davids, with 14 points, were the top performers for the Mannings team.

Perfect win record

In the 'junior' game, Cornwall College were ruthless and won the first quarter 23-0, the second 28-2, the third 12-5 and the final quarter 23-6. The win gives them a perfect win record from their seven games.

Robert McIntosh with 25 points; Romaine Hinds (16), Tevin Brown (15) and Kyle Scholas (10) all combined to make it a most miserable afternoon for Mannings. Janiel Gordon, with nine points, was the only bright spark for Mannings.

The full point standings in the Under-19 competition reads: Herbert Morrison 14, Cornwall College 14, Mannings 11, Muschette High 10, William Knibb 10 and Spot Valley 7. In the Under 16, the points are as follows: Cornwall College 14, William Knibb 12, Herbert Morrison 12, Muschette High 8, Mannings 7 and Rhodes Hall 5.
