Promoters move to ease problems at Sunday meet
Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

For the second time in two weeks, there will be back-to-back race meets, this Saturday and Sunday, at Caymanas Park.

The historic first-ever Sunday meet on November 29 attracted more than 17,000 racing fans to Caymanas Park, but despite the massive crowd Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) lost money on the meet.

With the government pulling the plug on off-track betting at the eleventh hour, caving in to pressure from the Church lobby, the meet was never going to make a profit for the promoters, as off-track betting accounts for 70 per cent of the company's take.

Another huge crowd is expected at the track on Sunday for the second of two meets planned this year. The facilities at the track (parking, food, betting machines, etc.) buckled under the pressure and CTL has put additional plans in place to address some of the problems.

Gates will be opened much earlier than usual this time around, while spillover parking from the car park to the western end of the track will be diverted to the in-field. CTL, in partnership with L.P. Azar Limited, will provide entertainment for families under the in-field tent.

Admission

This promotion failed to have the desired effect at the first Sunday meet but, according to a CTL official, things will be different this time around. Admission to the in-field is $500 for adults, $250 for children over 12 and free admission for those under 12.

With another large crowd anticipated, CTL has called on punters to purchase tickets for each race early so as not to be locked out at the betting windows.

Scores of punters were left stranded at the 90 betting windows throughout Caymanas Park at the start of each race on November 29, resulting in loss of revenue to CTL.

Sales for the first Sunday meet totalled $17.9 million, but this figure could have been in excess of $20 million had more punters been able to purchase tickets on their favourite horses.

Meanwhile, tomorrow's programme at Caymanas Park will feature 11 races, the Pick-9 embracing races three to 11 and the Super-6 from race six to 11. There are no carryovers.
