Managing teacher influence
THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE INFLUENCE of school administrators and classroom teachers has far-reaching implications. In most instances, it is what determines the actualisation of students' life potential. Therefore, it is necessary that this influence be efficiently managed.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to gain an insight into this influential relationship. I've seen that whereas a group of 11-year-olds would walk out on a particular teacher in the middle of her class session, that same group of students would cower and conform upon the approach of another teacher. I have heard of teachers telling expletives to students with the students "returning the compliment".

Painful examples

I have heard of a vice-principal who has turned students and parents against teachers whom she considers to be her rivals. Most distressing, I have heard of a parent brought to tears and beseeching divine intervention when she realised that another of her children would be subjected to, whatshe considered, the damaging influence of a particular teacher.

Teachers, like other human beings, are affected by life's challenges and, therefore, need support to cope. Many teachers have suffered losses, disappoint-ments and are involved in explosive relationships. At any given time, a portion of the teaching corps will be rendered unstable by these and other realities. Very often, the children suffer the end results of the negative effects of this instability. Such negative influences can damage children and lessen their chances of realising their potential.

Psychological evaluation

School administrators should be aware of this reality and be prepared to address these situations when they occur. However, too often it is the administrators who find them-selves in the predicaments and who wield negative influences over the children and teachers under their supervision.

With this in mind, it is imperative that the Government begin to psychologically evaluate teachers before placing them in positions of authority and provide the pertinent help needed to make them function optimally in the positions. This service should eventually be extended to all teachers prior to licensing and employment.
