The Salvation Army will launch its annual Christmas Kettle at the Montego Bay Civic Centre in St James tomorrow.

Major Allen Satterlee, the Salvation Army's divisional commander for western Jamaica, says the group is aiming at a $2-million figure this Christmas, with an initial target of $500,000 to be raised tomorrow.

"We have been very gratified by the support we have received, because we know these are difficult times," Major Satterlee told The Gleaner.

"We are calling on people to support us because there are many people who are worse off," he said.

The proceeds from the launch will go to purchasing food parcels, providing aid for the homeless, buying gifts for hospital patients, and providing funding for a children's home in Anchovy.

Scotiabank is the only confirmed sponsor for the event so far, but Major Satterlee noted that other major banks and downtown businesses have been encouraged to show their support for the venture as well.

Custos of St James Ewen Corrodus has been named guest speaker at tomorrow's launch.

The Salvation Army has been involved with the Christmas Kettle launch for the last 40 years.
