October is Heritage Month
The Editor, Sir:

In response to a letter penned by Dr Michael Barnett of the University of the West Indies titled, 'October should be National Heritage Month', please note, October has for some time been designated Heritage Month.

Perhaps the public relations machinery of our cultural agencies, as, too, the Government's media arm, the Jamaica Information Service, are lagging in highlighting this fact. I encourage The Gleaner to verify and make a public correction, for all our sakes, especially our children.

Current focus

It is clear our current focus on the week of activities is insufficient. However, I wonder, is it that we can't keep the momentum for the entire month? Is that the challenge? What does that say about our cultural agencies? I assure you, as Jamaicans we are only too ready to embrace the country's diverse and rich cultural offerings.

I am, etc.,
