NOTE-WORTHY

Public sector overlaps

I read with interest an article on public sector overlaps (page A9) in the Sunday Gleaner of October 25 and comment as follows. Some cost-cutting measures the Government could adopt are:

Merge the National Road Safety Council with the National Road Unit. These agencies appear to be doing one and the same thing.

Merge the Toll Authority with NROCC these two agencies have similar functions and there is no reason for the government to be paying two CEOs to perform the same duties.

Incorporate National Irrigation with NWC.

Consolidate more road infrastructure programmes under the Ministry of Transport and works which is staffed with qualified engineers.

These are duplicating duties with no true benefit to the country except to create jobs for persons who really show little interest in the job.

A new responsible Jamaica needs to be created. Wake up Jamaica the world is watching you.

Boyne 's reviews

What's the point of Ian Boyne? Most of his articles - particularly the recent ones on atheism - have just been a pretentious list of books he claims to have read and his opinions on them.

My suggestion is that rather than sending these articles into the Gleaner, he just writes his comments on the Amazon.com review section.

Traffic hazards

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) must be commended for keeping the Mandela Highway clean, but this commendation is at the expense of road safety.

The cutting which is done mainly using weed whackers creates the potential for motor vehicle accidents by the hurling of pebbles by these same whacker machines.

The NSWMA must ensure that portable plastic guard fences are erected at each section being cut to stop the pebbles hitting windscreens of passing vehicles. The guard fence can have a minimum height of four feet.

Let us make our roads safe by reducing our speed and working safely.
