Saunders, Thompson shuttle away 2 titles

Nigella Saunders and Daniel Thompson emerged double winners at the senior All Jamaica Badminton Championships, which was played at the Constant Sprint Golf Club at the weekend.

Olympian Saunders, the many-time national champion and top seed, captured the women's singles and doubles, while Thompson won the men's doubles and mixed doubles titles.

Saunders easily beat unseeded Mikaylia Haldane 21-3, 21-9 to take the women's singles crown. She then teamed with Debra O'connor to defeat second seeds Geordine Henry and Haldane 21-8, 21-8 in the women's doubles final. Saunders and O'Connor were the top seeds.

Thompson teamed with Gareth Henry to defeat Charles Pyne and Dayvon Reid 21-19, 21-17 in the men's doubles final, before linking up with Haldane to get past Garron Palmer and Latoya Baily in the mixed doubles final.

In a much anticipated and hard-fought clash for the men's singles crown, top seed Pyne beat defending champion and number two seed, Gareth Henry, 24-22, 21-13 to win the men's singles title.

Men's singles: Charles Pyne (1) def. Gareth Henry (2) 24-22, 21-13;

Ladies Singles: Nigella Saunders (1) def. Mikaylia Haldane 21-3, 21-9;

Men's Doubles: Gareth Henry and Daniel Thompson (2) defeated Charles Pyne and Dayvon Reid (1) 21-19, 21-17;

Ladies Doubles:Nigella Saunders and Debra O'Conner (1) defeated Geordine Henry and Mikaylia Haldane (2) 21-8, 21-9;

Mixed Doubles: Daniel Thompson and Mikaylia Haldane defeated Garron Palmer and Latoya Bartley (2) 21-8, 21-19.
