'We are just starting to play as a team'

Waterhouse captain Irvino English believes team work is a major factor for their resurgence in this year's Digicel Premier League, following his club's 2-1 win over Humble Lions at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium on Sunday.

"The players on the team are just starting to play together and we just have to take it game by game," he said.

"The unity is building day by day. We just have to try and build back the love that Waterhouse bring."

"The season started off bad for us, we are trying to get back on track. We have gone two games unbeaten, we just need to maintain the winning streak," he added.

Waterhouse were pointless after their first five fixtures, losing four on the field and the other in the boardroom for using an ineligible player.

Precious points

English's goal in the 89th minute, a blast from just outside the 18-yard box, gave Waterhouse a precious three points over the Clarendon-based outfit.

It was the Drewsland team's second consecutive victory and it placed them on six points, the same as Humble Lions.

Earlier, Waterhouse's Nicholi Findlayson was shown the red card in the 17th minute by referee Valdin Ledgister for an off-the-ball incident, leaving Waterhouse to play a man short for 73 minutes.

That did not deter Waterhouse and marksman Kevin Lamey responded by scoring his first goal of the season, in the 25th minute. It was a gem. He was let through by playmaker, Kenardo Forbes and rifled a shot near the roof of goalie Walda Ricketts' net.

Zeicko Herrera equalised for the Lions three minutes before the break. His 30-yard shot took a cruel deflection and eluded Moshell Nelson in goal for Waterhouse.

Waterhouse's head coach, Geoffrey Maxwell, said the main reason for his team's victory was pure guts from his players and not necessarily a high standard of play.

"I'm a little disappointed with the way we played this evening. We played with more guts than anything else. We have been having a bad run and I suppose everybody wants to win a game, but I would love to see a bit more finesse in our game and tonight it was just about getting the win," Maxwell said.

Humble Lion's coach, Christopher Bender, was bitter with the loss.

"This is a bitter way to have lost a game. We thought we were the better team over 90 minutes. This is a lesson for the team. When we have dominance over another team then we should have at least been leading the game. If we are not leading then we must learn how to protect a draw and today we didn't do that successfully."
