Village United kept their unbeaten record intact in the 2009-10 Digicel Premier League yesterday afternoon when they battled to a 1-1 draw against lowly placed August Town at the Elliston Wakeland Youth Centre in Falmouth.
In a game which was woeful for the most parts, August Town took an early lead through Raymond Williamson, but Village United battled back to secure a share of the points through a second-half penalty by skipper Troy Smith.
Coach disappointed
"I am totally disappointed with today's result because we gave a below-par performance," said Village United's coach, Cassman Willaims. "I believe we got enough chances to have won the game nonetheless."
By virtue of the result, Village United moved up to eight points while August Town, who were scoring for the first time in six games, moved to two points.
"We are generally pleased with today's performance because we got our first goal of the season," said Calvert Fitzgerald, the coach of August Town. "We should have won the game but we are happy with the one point we got."
In the opening minutes, Village United had the better of the exchanges but tardiness in attack prevented them from capitalising on the opportunities they created, especially an easy chance which fell to Cordell Simpson in the seventh minute.
August Town took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the 29th minute.
Williamson caught the Village United defence napping and with a clear shot on goal, he directed his effort past the goalkeeper, making the score 1-0.
Village lifted their play after the goal and after missing two chances, they finally got on the scoresheet when they were awarded a 42nd-minute penalty. Skipper Smith converted easily, making the half-time score 1-1.
The second half was a lacklustre affair with the chances coming few and far between as the teams appeared quite sluggish in the strong wind coming off the sea.
