Wolmer's High and Camperdown are set to do battle at Heroes Circle this afternoon in one of several exciting matchups in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup, as the Michael Francis-coached Wolmerians look to avenge a 2-3 defeat suffered at the hands of their east Kingston rivals in their opening game.
Camperdown have looked impressive at times and are currently occupying the second spot in Group D on 12 points, one less than leaders St Andrew Technical High (STATHS) who play host to lowly Clan Carthy in another group game, while Meadowbrook and Papine face each other in a game of mainly academic interest.
Group E matches
In Group E, free-scoring Bridgeport (16 points) will look to extend their lead when they welcome St Andrew College, while second-place Tivoli are expected to add to their 10 points when they play Kingston High at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex. St Catherine High will play Holy Trinity in the other group game.
Bridgeport have scored 27 goals so far this season while conceding only once. However, they may find some challenges against a frugal St Andrew College defence that has only been breached five times all season. The first-round game between the two ended 2-0 in favour of the Portmore-based school, which will be looking to add to their commendable seven points in this their first year in the competition.
Tricky test for JC
Last year's finalists, Jamaica College (JC), who sit a point behind Waterford on 15 points in Group A, face a tricky test against third-place Edith Dalton James High, while Waterford will look to pile on the misery against cellar dwellers Penwood in their matchup. In the other Group A match, Pembroke Hall and Donald Quarrie will jostle for positions in the mid-table.
In their first encounter, JC ran out comfortable 7-0 winners over Edith Dalton James. However, the latter have rebounded well since that heavy defeat, with three wins out of their subsequent four games.
Additionally, the Duhaney Park-based outfit may have some good news on the horizon, as they may be awarded an additional three points to add to their nine gathered so far, for their first round game against Pembroke Hall which was not played because of an unprepared field.
