In an emotional speech on her arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday, Olympic and world 100m silver medallist, Kerron Stewart, urged Jamaicans to unite.

Stewart, who finished second behind teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser at last month's World Championships in Athletics, said the reaction of people to the team's performances meant much to her.

"When I see the videos of Half-Way Tree and I see people crying because of what we have done, it means so much," she explained.

She urged Jamaicans to stand behind each other for the betterment of the country.

"We need to stand behind each other," she said while making it clear that Jamaicans "don't only have latent ... we are some great Jamaicans".

She said athletes were playing their part, but that sport was not the only way for Jamaicans to have a positive impact.

not a bad thing

"... But if sport is the only way, if it's what we have to use right now, it is not a bad thing," said Stewart.

The 100-metre runner said she wanted to be a lawyer because she wanted to make a difference, but does not regret her current role in the society.

"If God is using my talent to make a difference in somebody's life, that's what I want to do," she said.

Minutes before, Stewart listened as minister of state in the Office of the Prime Minister, Shahine Robinson, told her she was a role model.

"I don't want to be an icon, I don't want to be a hero, but if somebody can look at my life and say 'She has influenced me in a positive way', that's want I want to do. That what I live for," added the former St Jago standout.

Stewart, a graduate of Auburn University, also hailed the other Jamaican athletes for their positive contribution to the society.
