Jamaican Dwight Thomas and Bahamian Donald Thomas recorded the only two English-speaking Caribbean victories at the Kawasaki Super Meet yesterday.
On an evening that Americans Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix captured the 100-metre events, Dwight Thomas dominated the 110-metre hurdles in 13.37 seconds and Thomas, a former World Champion, landed the high jump at 2.24 metres.
In the men's sprint hurdles, Thomas was unchallenged as he finished four-tenths of a second ahead of Japanese runner-up Moses Yume (13.77).
Yume led early, but Thomas blew past him before the halfway mark and authoritatively added to good wins he had in the past month, including the Zurich Golden League and Rieti International.
Russian Konstantin Shabanov was third in 13.96 seconds.
Donald Thomas, the 2007 IAAF World Championship gold medallist, outgunned a pair of Americans - Tora Harris (2.21) and Joe Kindred (2.21) - to win the high jump crown.
Missed chance
Former 100-metre World Champion Gay missed out on a fast time ahead of his clash this Friday with Jamaican Asafa Powell at the Daegu Pre-Championship meet in Korea.
He clocked 10.13 to defeat Japan's Naoki Tsukahara (10.31) in the 100 metres.
"I didn't get the time I wanted," said Gay, just three days after his blistering career-best 9.69 win at the Shanghai International.
Felix, the three-time 200-metre World Champion, clocked 11.22 seconds to win the women's 100, chased by the Japanese pair of Chisato Fukushima (11.42) and Mayumi Watanabe (11.64).
The Dominican Republic's former World and Olympic champion, Felix Sanchez, picked up a rare win when he clocked 48.91 seconds to defeat Japan's Kenji Narisako (49.41) in the 400 hurdles.
