New venture for Hyundai

Panton

Key Motors, sole distributors for Hyundai in Jamaica, is revamping its operations.

According to Chief Executive Officer Desmond Panton, his company is in the process of acquiring 'sub-dealers' which will be authorised to sell Hyundai vehicles.

Automotives has also learnt that at least two industry players are currently in negotiations - New Line Motors and Andre's Auto.

"In our agreement (with Hyundai), we can appoint sub-dealers," Panton said.

"We are in the process of appointing New Line Motors and others as sub-dealers for Hyundai," he continued.

When asked about the timing of this expansion in such a soft market - and the recent reduction in car prices - Panton said that the idea preceded current market conditions.

Enhance the sale

"We believe that the more people involved in sales and the more outlets the brand has, enhance the sale of the (product)," he said.

"They can bring in parts, so you have more outlets for (servicing)," Panton said.

He explained that this was not a sale of the brand.

Managing director of New Line Motors, Dr Harry Benjamin, said the market was challenging and every dealer needed maximum exposure. This was the primary reason for the alliance.

"We are essentially adding cars to our product line. Dealers have to use any advantages they can find, and Hyundai has decided to increase their frontage by dealing with us. It is a symbiotic relationship," Benjamin said.

Andre Hylton, CEO of Andre's Auto was hopeful in inking the deal.

"If our application is successful, Andre's will be offering Hyundai-related services at locations," he said.

He revealed that his capital outlay to train technicians and retool his shop would be extensive.
