The response by Prime Minister Bruce Golding to America's request for the extradition of Christopher Coke is appropriate. I do not understand the motive of my fellow Jamaican citizens, including Peter Phillips, saying the PM is mum on this issue.
The official response to the request was made last week. The PM stated that due process has to be followed and the appropriate actions would be taken.
Partial jurisdiction
I expect that this matter will be handled carefully. I particularly do not agree with the extradition of any Jamaican citizen to the USA. Why give them partial jurisdiction in Jamaica under some treaty that was agreed to by a group of people who were only too happy to suck up to the US?
The sole purpose of the Government is the protection of the rights of its citizens. We have drifted from this in the past, including the handling of the extradition matter during the administration of which Phillips was a part, and when the extradition of Jamaican citizens tainted by the president of the USA was allowed.
I am a proud Jamaican and I do not see why we should be so enthusiastic to fulfil their requests.
I am, etc.,
