LETTER OF THE DAY - Whither the IMF

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MOST popular topic on the circuit now is whether to renew relationships with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This is most unfortunate. For a country with a substantial amount of human and natural resources, it is unbelievable that we have descended to this level in terms of economic, social and moral decline. When one considers the level of advancement and progress this country attained up to some four decades ago, it is most discouraging. It is, therefore, imperative that we do some introspection to ascertain the motivating factors that contribute to this sad decline of our beloved country.

In general, we could categorically state that we once enjoyed quality status for a small island country. Countries that lagged behind us in those days in terms of socio-economic status have surpassed us and are now enjoying the quality we once experienced, or even better.

The days when the 'Jamaica Mon' was highly embraced are bygone days!

Most countries are experiencing the effects of the recent global meltdown. In our case, however, the crisis appears to have been a continuous one in recent times.

Imagine our country being classified among the top crime capitals in the world. What a shame!

Retrieval of this country from this socio-economic decadence has to be regarded as our number one priority with all entities public and private sectors making their substantial inputs to achieve this objective.

We need to formulate a dynamic national master plan for the country based on appropriate measures aimed at a substantial rehabilitation programme addressing key areas of development with appropriate priorities identified for implementation.

Rehabilitation objective

This master plan should address priority goals and establish long-, medium- and short-term programmes designed to attain this rehabilitation objective. The country seems to be drifting like a rudderless ship.

Yes, we probably need the IMF to give a jump start but we need a creatively conceptualised plan to lead us out of this dilemma.

I am, etc.,

Alfonso F. Jacques, JP

Padmore, St Andrew
