Dear Counsellor:
I am pregnant and very scared. This is my first pregnancy and I don't know what to expect. I have been doing some reading but sometimes I get very afraid.
- Annette
Dear Annette:
Pregnancy is a joy for those who are prepared. Individuals who have planned for pregnancy and can fulfil their dreams are very happy to be pregnant. Unfortunately, for those who are caught unprepared, this can be a time of great sorrow.
I will assume that you are happy to be pregnant but lack information about pregnancy. There are a lot of journals with relevant info in pharmacies. Also, the Internet can give you week-by-week information and pictures of baby development.
You need the support of your friends and family. Your supporters will give you information and encouragement. Don't be afraid or panicky. Many women have had babies before you. It is one of the most natural events in life. Be positive and approach the process with optimism.
Speak with your doctor about your concerns. You need to see your doctor regularly and to be taking supplements. Express your fears to your doctor.
Some individuals develop mental health problems in pregnancy. You may need to see a psychiatrist who will prescribe safe medication. Joint management between doctors may be needed.
Be happy and speak positive thoughts to your baby and yourself.
High-school graduate seeking employment
Dear Counsellor:
I am a graduate of a high school and seeking employment with no luck. I am good at using computers and I am awaiting my CXC results.
- Marie
Dear Marie:
At the best of times, it will take some time to pick up a job. You are at the entry level and will be able to pick up something in which computer skills are requisite.
I don't know if you were involved in clubs or sports, or had leadership positions at school. Many skills like fund-raising, organising, planning and implementing are learnt.
While you search for a job, you need to have some expert check your résumé and job letter. You may have certain interests so you can apply for a job in those areas. At your age, the job you get will not necessarily be in the area that you like. What you need is varied experiences in different fields of work.
Volunteering at church or in your community will be helpful. You will learn specific skills and these will be able to embellish your résumé. Many skills are learnt informally and can be put to good use.
Think of the career that will interest you and plan to attend college or university to get your qualifications. If you want to advance your career, you will need to do further study. Save your money earned from your current job so that you will need to borrow only a moderate amount of money.
Continue your search. You will pick up something you can do for a while.
