NOTE-WORTHY: Where is the independence?
It has been 47 years since Independence, but where is the independence for Jamaica?

The colonial powers still hold the yoke around Jamaican people's necks. Britain still control Jamaica's judicial and education systems. So tell me where is the independence in Jamaica.

I think the Jamaica government should wake up from its slumber and do what the people has voted it in power to do. The people are starving, the towns are in a terrible condition. For example, Montego Bay smells of urine, the traffic is terrible and the river smells; yet Jamaicans are jumping up and down about Independence. Wake up, people of Jamaica, the sun is coming up.

We could Learn from our neighbour

On June 30, I wrote to you advising that the Government of Jamaica's insistence that an investment of US$1.5 billion, including a minimum of 2,000 rooms required to obtain a casino license, was asking for too much and that Jamaica had lost several new hotel investments as a result of this policy.

Recently, I read in the newspaper that Guyana was getting its first casino and the investment required was only US$2 million to upgrade an existing hotel. I am sure that Guyana does not have the size and quality hotels that we have in Jamaica and it seems to be making the right move.

Maybe the Government of Jamaica could learn from this move by Guyana and we start small and expand as conditions dictate.

Kingston

landlords and tenants

I read in The Gleaner of July 27 about someone complaining that landlords are renting their premises very expensively because they know that people can't live under trees.

The other part of the story is that people will rent an apartment for months, don't pay the rent, then move out leaving light and water bills that have to be paid before the apartment can be rented again.

The landlords have their share of problems also.
