Jamaica made a bold step towards capturing the TCL Group-sponsored WICB Under-19 three-day and one-day double when they defeated defending champions Trinidad and Tobago by four wickets at Up Park Camp yesterday.
Set a modest 208 to win off their allotted 50 overs, Jamaica, led by Man of the Match, outstanding 15-year-old opener John Campbell, achieved their target for the loss of six wickets, and with it moved to the top of the standings along with Barbados and the Leewards, who also made positive starts.
25-run win
Barbados, who finished third in the three-day championship, defeated the Windward Islands by seven wickets at Kensington, while at Chedwin Park the Leewards recorded a 25-run win over Guyana.
At Up Park Camp, Jamaica, whose only defeat in the three-dayers came at against Trinidad, went all out to avenge the defeat, and thanks to Tacky High's Campbell, St Elizabeth Technical's Nicholson Gordon, Excelsior High's Ramon Senior, and Manchester High's Kemar Marshall they were able to achieve their objective.
Campbell, who is a West Indies Under-15 representative, first took 2-31 with his off spin and Gordon, 2-48, as Trinidad, who got off to bad start at 68-5, failed to recover, despite 49 from Evin Lewis and 31 from Akeil Cooper.
Senior, who was dropped after Jamaica's second game of the five-round three-day championship, then responded well to score an 83-ball 54, Campbell made 52 while Marshall got 30.
"We knew that if we were to defeat Trinidad we would have to double our efforts and that's what we did," said Campbell.
