Twilight years

1963: Toast to happiness: Sir Alexander and Lady Bustamante drink the first toast at an informal reception at the prime minister's Tucker Avenue residence, shortly after their wedding in September 1963.

Originally a Moravian - it was her attendance at the Church of the Redeemer at the intersection of Duke and North streets in Kingston which first brought her to the notice of Sir Alexander, who lived in the area at the time, and who took a friendly interest in the little churchgoing girl. In later life, she became a Roman Catholic, the faith to which her national-hero husband belonged.

As she entered into her own twilight years, Lady Bustamante gradually with-drew from public gaze, although continuing to do her good works in her typical unobtrusive fashion. But her 70th birthday was not forgotten by her friends and co-workers of the BITU and JLP, who staged a party in her honour at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on March 8, 1985 - making it a memorable milestone in her long and valuable life.

The happy couple in later years.
