Jamaica off to Swimming World Championships

Jackie Walter, Jamaica's swimming technical director, is confident that the country's four-member team to the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships to be held in Rome from tomorrow through to August 2 will represent the nation well.

Three of the four-member team, Kendese Nangle, Natasha Moodie and Brad Hamilton left the island last night to join Jonathan Wong who has already arrived in Rome.

"Three of them have been preparing abroad with their coaches. They are very well prepared and they are all excited about going," Walter said.

"Nangle has been working with me here and I think she is ready," she said.

Nangle will compete in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle. Moodie will swim in the 50 and 100m freestyle while Hamilton will compete in the 50 and 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Wong will swim in the 50, 100, and 200m freestyle.

Olympic swimmer Janelle Atkinson-Wignall will accompany the team as coach. John Eyre, president of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica also makes the trip. He will be the team's manager and delegate to the FINA general congress.

Mr. Kendis Nangle, former ASAJ vice president in charge of competitive swimming, will attend as Jamaica's alternate delegate to the congress.

An estimated 2,500 athletes from all over the world are expected to take part.
