The top 20 players from the recently concluded Scotiabank/ Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Preparatory League are currently going through the rudiments of cricket at a camp sponsored by the Scotiabank Group.

The camp started on Friday at Sabina Park, and will end at the Kensington cricket ground on Wednesday.

Jimmy Adams, a former West Indies captain and technical director of the JCA, and Robert Samuels, a former Test batsman and Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) sports officer, are coordinating the camp.

Adams explained the basis for the camp as they players began their drills last Friday.

"The camp started fairly well, it is a week of camp where we are going to introduce them to the basics of the game and see if we can have them leaving the camp not only having fun, but also learn something. At this stage, we find them very receptive.

"I see within a short pace of time that they are up to it."

Top performers

He added: "Scotiabank wanted to do something to celebrate the top performers in that tournament and, on the other hand, we at the JCA are trying to get our development programme starting a little bit early."

Rory Rowe, acting sponsorship and promotions manager of Scotiabank, said that one of the main purposes of the camp is to reward the players who were outstanding in the Prep League. According to Rowe ... "They (the organisers) have recognised the talent of these players and placed them into a camp."

Under-15 programme feeder

"These Under-13 players can act as a feeder for the Under-15 programme of the JCA," he suggested. At the end of the camp, the players will play a Twenty20 match. The players are drafted from champions Monymusk from Clarendon, beaten finalists Hydel, Lannaman's, Mona and St James.

The sponsorship of the league combined with the cricket camp will cost the sponsor approximately $3.3 million. Scotiabank also sponsors 'kiddies cricket' which is a six-over per side fun-loving game for children between the ages of seven-12
