Buccaneers of Caymanas and Advantage General earned the right to contest the July 26 final of the Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Golf Cup on Sunday when they topped the six-team play-off on match-day three at the scenic Cinnamon Hill Golf Course in Montego Bay.
Coming in their match-up against JMMB Eagles facing a must-win situation, the Buccaneers left nothing to chance in what turned out to be a one-sided affair in their match-play showdown, carving out an impressive 8.5 to 1.5 win over their opponents.
"We played extremely well today, taking home eight-and-half out of a possible 10 points," said Metry Seaga, captain of the Buccaneers. "All the members of the team played very well today, so we are quite confident going into the final in two weeks' time."
Advantage General's route into the final was a lot tougher, as at the end of their match-play showdown with Ocean Spray Springs, the scores were locked at 5-5, forcing the players back on the golf course for a tiebreaker. Dudley Wilson got the better of Nigel Davey in the tiebreaker to send Advantage General into the final.
"We started at a disadvantage because one of our players was absent, which meant we handed our opponents a point before taking the course," said Sean Morris, the captain of Advantage General. "I needed to win the final hole to get into the play-off and I did."
According to Morris, while he was always cognisant of the fact that getting five points out of nine was going to be difficult, his confi-dence was significantly boosted when his dimunitive teenage daughter created a stunning, upset defeating Michelle Gabay.
"Dudley (Wilson) played well in the tie-breaker as he managed to turn the tables on Nigel Davey, who had beaten him in 7-6 when they met earlier in the day," said Morris. "We are now a very confident unit going into the final against Buccaneers."
In earning their slot in the finals at the expense of JMMB Eagles, Jody Barrows, with a close 6-5 win against Maggie Lyn in their female clash, captain Seaga with a 4-3 triumph over Rodger Braham and Donald Chung, who eclipsed Basil Lue 5-4 were outstanding for Buccaneers.
For Advantage General, the veteran Dennis Atkinson, with an 8-7 win over Rene Phillips; Gordon Hutchinson, 2-0 over Burt Rodney; David Baugh, 3-1 over Dave McNulty, and skipper Morris and his daughter, Danielle, were outstanding.
"Coming here today, five of the six teams were in with a chance of making the final, so all credit to Buccaneers and Advantage General," said Oliver McIntosh, of SportsMax, the driving force behind the event. "I am particularly pleased with the performance of young Danielle Morris and we hope her performance will inspire more youngsters to come into the sport."
