Rampaul keen on Test call
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC):

Ravi Rampaul has railed against being pigeon-holed as a limited-over bowler for West Indies.

Rampaul enhanced his reputation with a career-best four wickets for 37 runs from his allotment of 10 overs to set West Indies up for an eight-wicket victory over India in the second one-day international yesterday at Sabina Park.

"I enjoy all types of cricket matches, and I am just waiting for my opportunity to play Test cricket," said Rampaul, who has played 34 ODIs for the Caribbean side.

Fitness progress

He added that he has been working with former West Indies trainer Ronald Rogers to regain his fitness, and was making steady progression after a series of injuries set back his career.

"I have been working hard, apart from cricket," he said. "I have been doing a lot of physical work, and I'm getting fitter. I still need to do a bit more work, but I am getting there slowly, but surely."

Rampaul felt his spell was one of his best in recent memory since he recovered from a series of injuries, particularly shin splints which threatened to ruin his career.

"It was the best I have bowled for a long time," he said. "I was playing four-day cricket, and coming back to ODIs, my rhythm and everything went well, and [on Sunday] I felt I bowled really well.

"I was getting a little swing with the ball, so I was just waiting for them to play the rash shots."

Helpful pitch

Rampaul also indicated he enjoyed yesterday's spell because it allowed him to bowl in an aggressive manner on a helpful pitch against opponents susceptible to the short-pitched delivery.

"I'm always an attacking bowler, and I think the captain knows that I am an attacking bowler but I can bowl tight as well," he said.

"They weren't too comfortable with the short balls so I used it as a surprise delivery."

The victory drew West Indies level 1-1 in the four-match series, which now shifts to St Lucia for the final two ODIs that will be contested on Friday and Sunday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
