Gov't courting private sector
The Ministry of Justice has started discussions with the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce to explore the possibility of the private sector building courthouses to be acquired by the government on a lease and sale basis.

According to the Minister of Justice, Senator Dorothy Light-bourne, private-sector partnership will play a major role in the plans to modernise the court infrastructure islandwide.

Seeking technical assistance

The justice minister says the ministry is seeking technical architectural assistance from the private sector for the preparation of a court facilities master plan.

"The ministry contemplates the development of a uniformed design that will produce a standardised arrangement for all courts across the island," Senator Lightbourne said.

She says already a Cabinet submission has been prepared seeking approval for architectural services to expand the Supreme Court and Registry, located at the former NCB building at 52-54 King Street.

According to Lightbourne, if the justice system is to be fixed, partnerships with all stakeholders will be essential.
