Thompson still on top at Suffolk
EAST BOSTON, Massachusetts (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Winston Thompson reeled off two winners at Suffolk Downs on Tuesday, to maintain his lead at the northeastern United States racetrack.Thompson posted narrow victories in races two and four, opening with a win aboard the bay filly La Soldadita before returning two races later to carry Three Angels to another impressive win.

With his success, Thompson moved to 26 wins for the season, four clear of Orlando Bocachica, with Carlos Quinones in third place on 19 wins.

Going off as the hot favourite in race two, Thompson tucked La Soldadita in mid-pack just off the lead as Island Whirl Girl took the field through its early paces in the event over a mile for three-year-olds and upwards.

Thompson gradually pushed the four-year-old into contention and grabbed the lead heading into the stretch.

Island Whirl Girl rallied gamely but Thompson held the filly firm under a steady drive to win by three-quarters of a length.

In race four, Thompson produced a similar ride to get Three Angels to the post first in the event over a mile on dirt.

Following a level break, Thompson raced the four-year-old at the rear of the field, looking for racing room as Oh So Cybil and Jackiesdreamchaser disputed the lead.

Race six

Thompson got his opening mid-way through, moved outside the leader in the upper stretch and kicked Three Angels on strongly.

I Am The Queen's late run made things interesting but Three Angels held on to win by a neck.

Meanwhile, Barbadian reinsman Chris Griffith rode two winners at Fort Erie, also on Tuesday.Griffith reached the winners' enclosure with Sea Spice in race six and returned there in race seven with Gabby's Victory, to move to 13 wins for the new season at the east-central Canadian racetrack.

He is now joint fourth with Edward Keith Robinson, with Rui Pimentel on top of the standings with 34 wins and Melanie Pinto second on 22 wins.

Griffith got Sea Spice away to a good start in the event over 6-1/2 furlongs and chased down early leader Briarhill to take the lead on the turn.

At the halfway stage, the four-year-old chestnut gelding led by a head and Griffith steadily increased his lead before racing to the post by 21/2 lengths.

In race seven over 1-1/16th miles, Griffith raced Gabby's Victory near the rear of the field as Awesome Style and Naked Love disputed the early lead.

Griffith made the move on the far turn, bringing the four-year-old filly from mid-pack with a sweeping run on the outside.

In the stretch, Griffith engaged Native Wisdom in an intense battle before prevailing by 11/2 lengths in one minute, 48.09 seconds.
