Paulwell and the nuclear energy debate

Paulwell

The Editor, Sir:

Have we considered the cost of acquiring nuclear energy? Have we looked at all possible downsides of having such technology on an island the size of Jamaica. Have we looked at a worst case scenario such as the impact of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, the thousands of hectares of contaminated and unusable wasted land that now exists around Chernobyl.

Have we considered the fact that we are prone to earthquake. And who would Paulwell pay to take the waste? If he does not have a buyer, will he keep the waste in his backyard?

Before we have a serious discussion on nuclear energy, why not have a feasibility study on the use of wind and solar energy. Why not see what per cent of our present energy needs could be generated this way and then reduce our oil import accordingly. We have sunshine and wind almost all year around so I think these alternative sources of energy should be first considered before having a debate on nuclear energy.

I am, etc.,
