Gayle, Bravo gain all-star selection
LONDON (CMC):

Two members of the West Indies side that reached the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup were named in the team of the tournament announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday.

The selection panel chose West Indies captain and opener Chris Gayle, as well as all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the final 11 of the all-star side which will be led by winning Pakistan captain Younis Khan.

Picking the team

"The teams were chosen by a select group of experts who were given the task of picking a balanced side for all conditions on the basis of performances in the tournament," stated an ICC news release. "Statistics were used, but were not the sole basis for selections."

The selection panel comprised BBC Radio presenter and former England fast bowler Jonathan Agnew; TV presenter and former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop; tournament director and former South Africa fast bowler Steve Elworthy; match referee and former Australia fast bowler Alan Hurst; as well as Deputy Editor of India Today magazine Sharda Ugra.

Gayle finished the competition as the third-highest run scorer with 193 runs at an average of 48.25 and struck the second-highest individual score of 88 against Australia at The Oval in his side's opening match.

Bravo's 154 runs at 38.50 was the 11th highest in the competition and he complemented this with 10 wickets at 18.40 apiece - which made him the seventh-best bowler - for a fine all-round performance.

The men's team, including 12th man, contained four players from Pakistan, three each from South Africa and Sri Lanka and two from the West Indies.

The ICC also chose a women's team to be led by victorious England Women captain Charlotte Edwards, but no member of the West Indies Women's side made the cut.
