To catch a thief
The Editor, Sir:

The lottery scammers of western Jamaica have brought shame and disgust to Jamaica, although there is a certain element of Jamaican society that is going to respect them for their craftiness. Sophisticated thievery is admired in Jamaica.

Catching these crooks needs to be done in a sophisticated manner. Here are some suggestions. Why not use the tools of their trade to catch them? Each cellphone has a global positioning system (GPS), so why not pose as a rich American? Calling the robbers should be simple enough. If our policemen here use GPS tracking they should be able to pinpoint the exact location of the crooks.

If that doesn't work, apprehending the recipient of money at one of the collecting agencies in a specific city under a specific name should be easy. If the police wire the money to the unsuspecting crook, they should be able to snare their prey.

If Jamaica was ever able to eliminate crime or reduce it to marginal levels, all of its property would be more valuable than Manhattan or Beverly Hills in the USA.

Jamaica is so beautiful that when I get to Paradise and if it looks exactly like the island I will not be disappointed. I am not referring to Kingston, of course.

I am, etc.,

ROBERT JACKSON
