Christianity's failure
THE EDITOR, Sir:

The phrase: 'The failures of Christianity' is reverberated throughout the world with such rapidity that it is very difficult not to take serious note of it. Indeed, the pages of history have been badly stained by the actions of those who represent the Christian religion; from the highest pope who designed, approved and participated in ungodly undertakings such as the Crusades, the Thirty Year War, and the Inquisition, to the humble peasant who habitually removes his neighbour's landmark and then turns around and curses the neighbour when he is rebuked for his misdeed.

Evil phenomena

To the unbeliever, one of greatest enigmas of our time is the fact that the country is saturated, even inundated, with churches, yet Jamaica remains one of the cruellest places on Earth. But it should not escape notice that murder and other violent acts are not the only evil phenomena which coexist with the mushrooming of churches in Jamaica, for beside being behind, before, around and inside, coexisting with the Christian religion are high levels of corruption, poverty, immorality, alienation, etc.

All this takes place while, and perhaps, because the Jamaican church has graduated from a place of worship and the preaching of the gospel to a place looking more like an auction centre and investment club.

Recent news reports about a pastor's alleged misconduct may not even survive to be a nine-day wonder because morally shocking episodes involving pastors have become commonplace within Christianity.

All of this should serve as a cla-rion call to those who call themselves Christians to seriously exa-mine if they may have not chosen the Christian religion over the church of Jesus Christ. For the Christian church which is unfolding before our eyes, and which hijacked and supplanted the church of Jesus Christ at the start of the 4th century AD has now found itself devoid of any relevance except within the realm of social engagement.

I am, etc.,
